Boston, USA: A Dermatology Observership at Massachusetts General Hospital

Continuing to learn from experienced specialists is an important part of my development as a dermatologist. I was honoured to undertake a short-term dermatology observership at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, USA, with Dr Steven Chen and his team.
Learning with the dermatology team
During my visit, I observed dermatology ward rounds and consultations at the Cutaneous Lymphoma Clinic. These experiences gave me valuable insights into the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of complex skin conditions and cutaneous lymphoma.
The team’s clinical discussions also highlighted the importance of collaboration across specialties when caring for patients whose medical needs extend beyond the skin.

Beyond the clinical experience, I was struck by MGH’s rich medical history. A particularly memorable moment was visiting the Ether Dome and seeing the renowned painting Ether Day, 1846.
The painting commemorates the public demonstration of ether anaesthesia at MGH in 1846—an event that transformed surgery and helped lay the foundations of modern anaesthesia. Standing beside it offered a moment to reflect on how medical advances have changed patients’ lives.

Although brief, this observership broadened my clinical perspective and reinforced the importance of considering each patient’s overall health alongside their skin condition. I look forward to applying these insights in my daily practice in Batu Pahat.
My sincere thanks to Dr Steven Chen and the MGH dermatology team for their warm welcome, thoughtful guidance and generosity in sharing their knowledge. It was a privilege to learn in a hospital with such a remarkable history and an enduring commitment to advancing medicine.
